Flamenco Glossary


General

Compás: Compás is the basic musical unit for flamenco music. In classical scores these units are defined by the vertical bars, but in flamenco this units usually include four or two classical bars.

Cantaor: Singer.

Palo: Styles of flamenco.Each style has its own rhythm, usual chords.

Tocaor: Guitar player that accompany.

Guitarists teerms.

Al 1, al 2, etc... (in the # for capo) : Conternin to the fret position where capo is disposed.

Por arriba: Guitarist plays revolving around Am tonality.

Por el medio: Guitarist plays revolving around Em tonality.

Singing structure


Cante valiente: it could be translated as 'corageous singing'. It is a tercio that is usually performed by the siguer showing his skills.

Macho: Usually the last stanza (tercio) of a flamenco song.

Tercio: Usually a stanza or musical unit (a sentence as in malagueña) of the flamenco singer.


Depth of singing.

Jondo: Singing that is prerformed with special deph and profundness.

Festero: Contrary to 'jondo'happy or frivolous singing. Almost whole the music in the world is
'festera'.

Voices

Afillá voice: Hard, dark and rough voice.

Round Voice: Sweet and thick voice.

Natural Voice: As round voice, but no sweet.

Cantaora Voice: bright voice.

Laina Voice: high-pitched and vibrating voice.

Falsete: falsetto voice
